MAÍZ

Zea mays, comúnmente llamada maíz, choclo, millo o elote, es una planta gramínea anual originaria de América introducida en Europa en el siglo XVII. Actualmente, es el cereal con mayor volumen de producción en el mundo, superando al trigo y al arroz.

Zea mays es una planta monoica; sus inflorescencias masculinas y femeninas se encuentran en la misma planta. Si bien la planta es anual, su rápido crecimiento le permite alcanzar hasta los 2,5 m de altura, con un tallo erguido, rígido y sólido; algunas variedades silvestres alcanzan los 7 m de altura.
El tallo está compuesto a su vez por tres capas: una epidermis exterior, impermeable y transparente, una pared por donde circulan las sustancias alimenticias y una médula de tejido esponjoso y blanco donde almacena reservas alimenticias, en especial azúcares.
Las hojas toman una forma alargada íntimamente arrollada al tallo, del cual nacen las espigas o mazorcas. Cada mazorca consiste en un tronco u olote que está cubierta por filas de granos, la parte comestible de la planta, cuyo número puede variar entre ocho y treinta.

Zea mays, commonly known as corn, corn, millet or corn, is a plant native to America annual grass introduced in Europe in the seventeenth century. He is currently the largest volume of cereal production in the world, surpassing wheat and rice. Zea mays is a monoecious plant, their male and female inflorescences are on the same plant. Although the plant is annual, the rapid growth allows it to reach up to 2.5 m tall with a stem erect, stiff and strong, some wild reach 7 m high. The stem is itself composed of three layers: an outer epidermis, waterproof and transparent, a wall along which food substances and spongy bone tissue and white where you store food reserves, especially sugars. The leaves take on an elongated coiled closely to the stem, which are born ear of the plant. Each pod consists of a stem or cob which is covered by rows of grains, edible part of the plant, whose number can vary from half past eight.
