SORGO
SORGHUM
Sorghum (Sorghum spp.)
Is a genus of 20 species of grasses native to tropical and subtropical regions
of East Africa. Grown in their area of origin, Europe, America and Asia as
grain for human consumption, animal feed production in and for the production
of alcoholic beverages and brooms. Its resistance to drought and heat makes it
an important crop in arid regions, and is one of the most important food crops
in the world. Being a gluten-free food, is a nutritious option for people with
celiac disease. Possesses antidiarrheal, or astringent, and homeostatic.
Sorghum has a habit and plant physiology (metabolism of "C-4")
similar to that of corn (Zea mays), but with a more extensive root system and
branched, fibrous features and up to 12 dm deep. The stem is cylindrical, 1 to
3 m tall, with a terminal inflorescence herringbone pattern composed of
bisexual flowers. The grain is a caryopsis of about 4 mm in diameter.
